GAM 720 week 01:04 Paper fortune teller (cooties)

Image
Instead of a deck of cards... Could a different device interact with the game/narrative ? Could I use sewn paper and conductive thread to create a soft circuit attached to a breadboard and Arduino... would that work? Paper Fortune teller Ask a question  Choose one of 4 images with a word  Count the number of letters in that word  Choose one of 4 numbers  Count that number  Chose one of 4 letters a,b,c or d Read that answer  E-Textiles  The device touches all centre points initially.  Then 1 and 2 touch with 3 and 4 touching  Then 1 and 3 touch with 2 and 4 touching  This repeats for the first choice and then the second choice  Then the device is opened to reveal the answer  Where points connect the circuit is completed  It is disconnected when shifting to the next position  And reconnected when shifted back.  There are two circuits.  There will be different patterns...

GAM720 Week 1:03 Wheels Brain Dump

Brain Dump Ancient gaming   When I watched the introduction to gaming I noticed an ancient game carved into a clay tablet that originated from Mesopotamia . I have a keen interest in the origins of civilisation and for me, it starts here.  Multiple pathway storytelling I was thinking about VR Animation and how the old fighting fantasy books constructed a story with multiple pathways. The line of narrative was determined by the roll of a dice which effectively makes it a story of chance. I thought about Bandersnatch and how this could be considered similar.   Card Games  I began to think about ancient games and story telling which strangely bought me to the ideas of   oracle cards. I have always been fascinated with them because not only are they an ancient form of   Scrying, they contain the archetypes embedded in story telling. For me, oracle cards are a book disguised as a card game.   World Building The poem Wheels is ful...

GAM 720 Week 1:02 Initial Response

Project concepts so far. Fizhogg - This project could be further developed as a VR narrative story. I haven’t got a narrative to work with at the moment but studying multipathway interactive story telling could be the way to go. So looking at the narrative structure of bandersnach for example, could be informative. I am interested in developing this kind of project for submission to VR Annecy category and I am planning to check this out directly at the festival in June this year.  Wheels (Critters) - This project has been on the back burner for several years as I have plans to develop it as a short stop motion animation shot in wilder, natural spaces. This has the most potential for a stand alone project as it has a clear narrative focus. The poem “Wheels’ written by Nancy Cunard can form the basis of the narrative and the characters and world can be developed from there. I am thinking about a 1920’s style cirque De soleil meets alice in wonderland narrative which can be ‘pl...

GAM720 - Week 1:01 An introduction to Game Design.

Image
Game Design. I have chosen the example of Luminocity, produced by state of play games studio, London. This award winning production has paper construction and engineering at the heart. It took three years to complete and is really very beautiful. The objective of the game is to solve engineering problems so that the player can progress through the different platforms of the world in order to rescue Lumi’s kidnapped grandad (who is more than he seems).        So today, I’m immersing myself in gaming experiences to inform my Game language and release my  inner play demon... as prescribed by Doctor Dom :D Reflection I am inspired as I watch the introduction to Game Design and I am surprised that I recognise so many examples given in the video which I have long forgotten. I am prompted to think about my gaming experiences and as I begin to think more critically about the games design of the games I’ve played I look at them thr...
